Could not perform operation because of I/O error

RadiMation® tried to communicate with a device, by using the VISA layer. However due to an unknown error or problem, an unexpected I/O error was raised by the VISA layer.

Very often this error is being raised, when a serious error on the communication bus is detected. This can for example be a suddenly disconnected USB cable, an unresponsive USB hub, or a component that is influenced by EMC disturbance. Because the complete chain of all the (hardware) devices are needed for the communication, it is possible that any one of those (hardware) devices is causing the error.

This error is often related to RadiMation Error: -1073807194: The connection for a given session has been lost.

Solution

  • Restart the measurement.
  • If restarting the measurement doesn't help, shutdown the PC and the measurement equipment, and start them again.
  • Improve the cabling and shielding of cables to reduce the influence of EMC disturbance.

To further investigate this problem, it is important to be able to determine which device (PC, measurement equipment, switch, hub, etc...) is causing the unexpected error. Often the problem remains, and starting a new measurement will not be possible. If this is indeed the case, restart one of the devices, and try to start the measurement again. If the problem is still present, restart another device to determine if the problem is resolved. By restarting all the relevent hardware components one by one, it should be possible to determine the device that is causing the unexpected error.

When the same error happens again in the future, it is advised to first restart the suspected problematic device to confirm that it indeed is causing the problem. When the suspected problematic device is determined and located, investigation for the exact cause of the problem can be continued.
