GPIB system driver error (EDVR): Virtual machine/USB connection problem

A RadiMation device driver is trying to control a GPIB device through a GPIB board. However an error is raised by the GPIB system driver that controls that GPIB board. The driver has detected that the the link to the USB based GPIB controller is suddenly lost. This for example can happen when a virtual machine is used and from which the connection was suddenly interrupted.

National Instruments NI-488.2

This error corresponds to the National Instruments NI-488.2 error 0xE1080086.

This error is encountered when attempting to open a handle to a GPIB USB interface that is not usable in a Virtual PC environment, such as Windows 7 XP mode, VMWare, or Virtual Box. The error can occur after the Virtual PC resumes from sleep/suspend state while the GPIB USB interface is attached to it. To solve this problem, the GPIB USB interface will need to be reattached to the Virtual PC again.

You might also encounter this error if a transaction error occurs on USB. This can happen on some machines when other USB devices are inserted to or removed from the system. If this occurs, remove the GPIB controller from the USB port and then reinsert it.

Solution

When a National Instruments GPIB board is used, the configuration of the GPIB board can be checked and changed in the NI-MAX software.

  • Check if the GPIB device is still present and available in the NI-MAX software.
  • Disconnect and connect the GPIB device again.
  • Make sure if a laptop is used, that the machine is not going into hibernate
